Pharmaceutical Sales Rep Jobs â Do You Need a Degree?
I am going to share with you what I have learned from over a decade of being in pharmaceutical sales rep jobs but before I proceed here is a disclaimer: The opinion express afterward was uniquely based on my locality and the companies which I have worked with. Our situation might vary so do proceed with caution. With that said, here is what I think about having a degree to get into pharmaceutical sales â it is an overblown myth and I will explain why.In late 2003, I was promoted to the post of Area Business Manager for a Multinational Pharmaceutical Company (MNC). I was assigned to a small town and I had 4 Sales Executives who directly report to me and 4 others who indirectly report to me.One of my team members, a 23 years old female, was recruited into the company by the previous Area Business Manager (ABM). She worked with a local generic company before she got her feet into MNC. And the best thing about her was â she had no degree. But I have not taken this to the extreme yet. When I graduated from University, the first job I landed was a Product Specialist (i.e. Sales Rep) for a big European Pharmaceutical Company. My Group Sales Manager at that time was a 40 plus years old male who got into the current company after a bought over. And he has no degree whatsoever.I can write more stories of a few others I know who have their footing in airlines and banking before joining pharmaceutical companies as their sales representative. They obviously do not possess a degree but they enjoy the success that any degree holder would by joining the company.I am convinced that a degree is not a âbe all, end allâ requirement for pharmaceutical sales rep jobs. The industry is a level playing field and every player has an equal chance to succeed. When Does Having A Degree Help? When applying for a job as pharmaceutical sales rep, a degree creates good impression. A related degree e.g. Biomedical Sciences impress even more. And during training, most degree holders display positive attitudes towards absorbing new material and applying it on the field. This does not mean the non-degree holders are at opposite ends. Having a degree seems to facilitate the whole process.By now, you should be able to draw your own conclusion if you have decided to pursue this career in pharmaceutical sales. Do not let âyou must have a degreeâ myth stops you on the track but do strive to give your best shot at every recruitment opportunity.âWhen there is a will, there is a way. â
