Pharmaceuticals in Your Drinking Water – A Health Hazard

You have always believed that pharmaceuticals can only serve to promote human health and cure diseases. However, recent studies have proved that certain pharmaceuticals in your daily drinking water can prove to be extremely dangerous to your health. These new class of water contaminants and pollutants consist of drugs such as birth control oils, seizure medications, anti-depressants and antibiotics. Even cancer treatments and painkillers have been detected in various sources of drinking water, which prove to be quite harmful if drunk.
It is true that the concentration of such pharmaceuticals in drinking water is extremely low, but the presence of so many prescription drugs and over the counter drugs have begun to become a cause of worry for health experts
How do pharmaceuticals enter drinking water?
The most obvious source for pharmaceuticals contaminant is the pharmaceuticals industries, hospitals and other medical facilities. However, incidentally, households also contribute a lot to this contaminant in our drinking water. People are often seen to dispose of unused medicines by flushing them through the toilets. Again, human excreta may contain varied incompletely metabolized medicines. These flushed drugs can pass through the sewage treatment facilities and can pass into the waterways and lakes. This is how drinking water can be contaminated – something that even you have perhaps contributed.
Sometimes manures containing traces of pharmaceuticals can be spread on land and they may then percolate into the ground drinking water, thus contaminating it. The groundwater can also be contaminated when discarded pharmaceuticals are dumped as landfills or in dumpsters. Yet another source of pharmaceuticals contaminant in drinking water is the farm animals. Their indigested hormones, antibiotics and veterinary medicines can pass into the water, thereby passing on the unwanted pharmaceuticals into the water.
What are the risks of chronic exposure to pharmaceuticals?
Researchers have found that being exposed to random combinations of low-level pharmaceuticals have alarming effects on the human body. Scientists are concerned that many of the pharmaceutical drugs can go on to interfere with the production of important hormones in the human body. Chemicals that produce such effects are called endocrine disrupters. Again, the release of antibiotics in drinking water is a cause of worry since this may result in some of the highly dangerous, disease causing bacteria to become immune to treatment and hence, there might be a spate of drug resistant diseases among the masses.
Apart from being a health hazard for humans, pharmaceuticals in water pose to be the most dangerous for aquatic life. Anti-depressants in water have been blamed for the altered sperm levels and spawning patterns for fishes in the water.
Purifying your drinking water
So how do you purify your water so that pharmaceutical contaminants are not present in it? Unfortunately, there aren’t any fool proof methods of removing these contaminants from water. However, it has been found that charcoal filters are the most effective among all the water treatment options. Charcoal filters can be used to purify both your home drinking water, as well as the public waters. The good news is that a number of public water providers in the US have woken up to the dangers of pharmaceuticals in the drinking water and have begun to use charcoal filters to treat the water.

Electronic Medical Billing Software Helps Run Medical Practices

As your medical practice continues to grow, billing is going to be more and more of a hassle. If you are still handling your billing processes manually, it’s a good idea to start looking at electronic medical billing software. Software can help to track and streamline billing processes for your medical practice. Here are some features to look out for. HIPAA compliance. HIPAA stands for Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, an act that was enacted in 1996 by the federal government. The software automatically checks for HIPAA compliance codes. A warning will appear if the code that you entered is not HIPAA compliant. Ease of use. The medical billing software that you eventually choose should be easy to use. Of course, a little training may be required. But it should be easy enough for anyone, even those without a technical background, to be able to learn how to use the software quickly. This means that the software should follow a similar process as a manual accounting system. Accounting made simple. Simplicity should be a recurring theme here. When you have all the numbers entered into the database, the software will be able to present the numbers to you in a clear and simple manner. At a glance, you can immediately see what is happening to the bills – how much was charged, how much has been paid, what is the amount overdue, etc. Appointment scheduling. All medical practices depend largely on appointments for revenue generation. The more appointments met, the higher the level of revenues. This advance feature helps to keep appointments well organized. Practice management features. The best billing software over delivers. In other words, it may even come with features such as patient referral reports. If you have a medical practice that depends heavily on referrals, you can easily see all the referral points in the software. Speed up insurance billing. Insurance billing, when done manually, is very time consuming because there is a need to retrieve relevant information when filing insurance claims. For example, different claim forms may be required for different type of medical claims. The billing software stores important insurance claiming information, thus speeding up the claim process. You can print custom claim forms from within the software. You can also send claims electronically to speed turnaround time. As the insurance policies usually change on a regular basis, you must also make sure that the billing software you are using has regular updates. Top notch support. Finally, before making a buying decision, always ensure that the support for the software is top notch. You may encounter bugs, or various other issues while using the software. To ensure that such problems don’t affect the operations of your practice, support must be readily available. Bottom line is, they must solve your problems quickly!

Pharmaceutical Sales Careers – Who Best Suit Them

Are you the best candidate for pharmaceutical sales careers? Do not short-listed yourself until you read what I am about to share in the next few paragraphs. If you were just graduated or you were just looking for a new career or you just lose your job, then consider careers in pharmaceutical sales as an option. It might be the best option for you.
I was not trained to be a pharmaceutical sales rep. My years of study in University prepared me for laboratory and research job. You can imagine what kind of change I had to go through to bring myself up to the expectation of pharmaceutical sales industry.
It was not easy.
But I manage, and it has been my sincere believe that I can share what I did back then and finally answer the question: Who best suit to build careers in pharmaceutical sales?
The Answer: The prepared ones.
A wise guy once said, “Chances favor the prepared mind.” Nothing truer has ever been said ever since. In pharmaceutical sales, I can show proof that a person can come from a different background but if he or she is prepared, career success is already in sight.
How To Prepare For Pharmaceutical Sales Careers
It takes a plan. A simplified plan consists of:
1) Preparing to make contact.
2) Preparing to ace once the contact has been made.
3) Prepare for entry level.
4) Prepare for strategic exit.
I coined the whole terms myself and now let me explain in standard terms.
Prepare To Make Contact
Contact in our context means ‘getting into the pharmaceutical industry’. To get into this industry, the best way is to join a pharmaceutical company. Preparing to join a company means getting your CV and your resume updated, and getting into the circle of players i.e. those who already work in the industry or better known as ‘networking’.
Networking means surrounding yourself with people who understand what it takes to be part of the culture – pharmaceutical culture, and that includes your healthcare provider and the pharmaceutical company’s representative.
Preparing To Ace The Contact
I meant this specifically to ‘interview with pharmaceutical company.’ Getting yourself magnetized with industry knowledge is the surest way to winning in an interview. All the necessary knowledge and skills to achieve this are readily available if you know where to look for.
Prepare For The Entry Level
This is easily done once you are inside the pharmaceutical company. A good company which by the way you have chosen through thorough preparation should provide you with the resources and tools to be good sales performers. Good company does not leave performance result to chance. It knows what works and what not. You preparation is to know how to adapt.
Prepare For Strategic Exit
Once you have a good grasp on what this industry is all about, you can decide which way you want to move; up, down, sideways or to a different territory. Once you have acquired the necessary knowledge, skills and attitude, your path to build strong pharmaceutical sales careers is assured.
If you have reached this paragraph you already knew that the answer to who best suit for careers in pharmaceutical sales in not objective. It is subjective to the kind of preparation a person willing to make. Just remember this phrase, “Chances favor the prepared candidate.”

What Exactly is Pharmaceutical Sales Careers?

Careers in pharmaceutical sales mean two simple things:
1) A person works for pharmaceutical company
2) That person does something related to sales
But if I just tell you these I believe you are going to ask me more questions because those two statements barely explain anything. With my 12 years of experience in Pharmaceutical Industry, let me explain what exactly pharmaceutical sales careers are, using my experience as a point of reference.
Working For A Pharmaceutical Company
I started my career as a Product Specialist for one European pharmaceutical company. I promote a wide range of products from antibiotics to antidepressants, and I cover both market segments; the Government and Private.
I spent 5 years there.
My friend, let’s just call me Zachary, also joined almost the same time as me, and he covers the General Practitioner (GP) and Retail Pharmacy (RP) market. After about 3 years working, one day the General Manager (GM) made a visit across the country and we got the chance to meet him. In that meeting, the GM thinks that Zachary suits marketing better than sales portfolio. The next thing we know, our friend was transferred to Head Quarters as a Product Manager, and he has been managing quite a number of product portfolios ever since.
Zachary started out just like the rest of us – as Product Specialist and built his career in pharmaceutical product marketing within the same company.
If you thought of building a career in pharmaceutical sales, this is one of the ways to go. But there are others options.
Working For More Than One Pharmaceutical Company
And I do not mean working for all the companies at the same time!
What I mean is making ‘strategic’ career change. Why you want to do this? In my personal opinion, this is the best way to build pharmaceutical sales careers, and I will explain why.
I made my first career move after 5 years of working with the European pharmaceutical company I told you about earlier. I move to one of the biggest Pharmaceutical Companies at that time – Pfizer. I grabbed the opportunity that was presented before me in the GP and RP sectors available back then.
I never had any experience in that sectors but I moved on. And that proved to be one of the best career moves I made. My basic salary sees a double digits percent jump almost immediately which is something I can only get if I worked another 20 years in the current company!
And good things keep rolling in.
When my Area Business Manager resigned due to personal reason, my colleague and I applied for the post, and guess who got it? I was chosen because of my experience in Hospital selling which my colleague did not have.
That is why planning a strategic career move is desirable to build careers in pharmaceutical sales. I hope I have made it clear with my personal example.
Sales Force Is Not The Only Career Opportunities
The example I have given you somewhat related to sales – Field force and Sales Manager. But the fact is, there are more.
First, like Zachary which I mentioned earlier, he moved to Marketing or Product Management. That is one possible area to expand your careers.
Second, if you are a registered Pharmacist, you have the option in the Regulatory Department; provided the pharmaceutical company you work for have one. Your role will be to facilitate a drug registration process, whether to bring it in, to change level of prescription, etc.
So you see, careers in pharmaceutical sales come in many form and at different levels. You can start in a company as a field force and move up to management level or you can plan strategic moves and grab the opportunity in other companies. You can also start in different department and build a solid career as long as that department related to sales. That is exactly what pharmaceutical sales careers mean.
